The main questions are: gravity cycle or pre-vacuum cycle? Class N, S, or B? The European standard EN 13060 breaks small sterilizers into classes, and class B is the one that gives you wrapped-instrument capability and vacuum cycles. You don't always need class B, but you need to know if your instruments require it.

And don't buy an autoclave without checking plumbing and steam requirements. Seriously. A floor-model sterilizer that needs a dedicated steam line and a drain can add thousands to the install cost. That's not 'installing equipment.' That's construction.

Once it's installed, budget for annual validation and biological indicator testing. It's not the fun purchase, but it's the one that keeps your practice from spreading contamination. If a vendor treats your order like it's too small for a real conversation about validation? That's information about the vendor.

Do I need a defibrillator AED or a hospital defibrillator?

For most clinics, the answer is an AED—the automated external defibrillator that analyzes the rhythm and tells the user to shock. A manual defibrillator is for people trained to interpret rhythms and choose energy levels. If you don't have an emergency team, you need the AED, not the manual box.

AED pads and batteries expire. That's not a marketing detail; it's a maintenance reality. If you mount an AED and forget about it, you may end up with a battery at 10% and pads past their replacement date. Add a calendar reminder, and build replacement supplies into the annual budget.

Also ask about pediatric pads or a pediatric mode if you're in a setting with kids. It's a small item on the P.O., but it's the difference between being prepared and being not-in-a-moment-you-can't-control.

How does a centrifuge work?

A centrifuge works by spinning samples in a sealed rotor. The spin creates centrifugal force, so denser particles migrate to the bottom while lighter material stays near the top. In a hospital setting, that's how you separate plasma from red blood cells, or urine sediment from supernatant. The underlying principle is pretty simple.

The part that trips up buyers is the difference between RPM and RCF. RPM is how fast the rotor spins. RCF—relative centrifugal force—is the actual force applied to the sample, expressed as 'x g.' Two rotors at the same RPM can produce different RCF depending on the rotor radius. So if you're buying a centrifuge for a specific protocol, ask for the RCF, not just the RPM. (Short formula: RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × radius in cm × RPM².)

And check the rotor type and certification. A rotor failure at speed isn't a supply problem—it's a safety problem. My experience is mostly with mid-range benchtop centrifuges, so if you're selecting one for high-volume reference lab production, you'll want input from the lab director, not just the buyer.

What's the one thing most buyers forget to ask?

They forget to ask what happens after the warranty ends.

I've learned that the hard way. The price of a pump or a monitor is easy to compare. The service plan, loaner availability, repair turnaround, and shipping costs are harder to compare—and they're where the surprises live. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I inherited a device where the first-year repair estimate was 40% of the original purchase price. That's the kind of number that makes you ask about the service contract before the PO, not after.
